If you’re traveling through the Balkans and wondering, “Is there a McDonald’s in North Macedonia?” — the answer may surprise you.

The Short Answer: No — Not Anymore

North Macedonia does not currently have any McDonald’s restaurants. However, it wasn’t always this way. McDonald’s did operate in the country until 2013, when all locations were shut down.

McDonald’s History in North Macedonia

McDonald’s first entered the North Macedonian market in 1997, with a flagship location in the capital city of Skopje. Over time, it expanded to several branches in and around the city, including popular shopping centers and busy downtown spots.

It quickly became a trendy hangout, especially for younger people and families. For many, it symbolized modernity and a taste of the West.

Why Did McDonald’s Leave North Macedonia?

The fast food chain closed its doors in 2013 — not because of lack of demand, but due to a fallout with the local franchise operator.

Here’s what happened:

- McDonald’s restaurants in North Macedonia were operated by a local company, **SJ Company**, under a franchise agreement.
- Disagreements between McDonald’s corporate and the local partner reportedly led to the termination of the franchise license.
- As a result, all seven locations were closed, and McDonald’s has not returned since.

McDonald’s didn’t provide detailed public statements, but the decision was seen as more political and legal than economic.

What Fast Food Chains Are Available Now?

Even without McDonald’s, North Macedonia offers plenty of fast food options:

- Burger King: Present in Skopje and other major cities
- KFC: Limited presence but expanding
- Domino’s Pizza: Available in key urban centers
- Local burger joints and grill houses: Serve ćevapi, burgers, and Balkan-style kebabs
- Street food: Popular options include burek, sandwiches, and toasties

While Western brands have a footprint, local food vendors are strong competitors.

Do Locals Miss McDonald’s?

Opinions are mixed.

Many residents — especially those who grew up in the 2000s — fondly remember McDonald’s as a social hotspot and affordable treat. Others see its exit as a non-issue, noting that local alternatives are often tastier and more affordable.

There have been periodic rumors about McDonald’s returning, but none have materialized as of 2025.

Final Thoughts: A Brief Visit, Then Gone

North Macedonia remains one of the few European countries without a McDonald’s — despite once having several. Its absence is due less to market failure and more to a business dispute that never got resolved.

Until then, travelers looking for a Big Mac in Skopje will have to settle for local grill fare — which, to be fair, is pretty good.
