A Colorado Rockies road trip is next-level — but you’ll need a game plan. Here’s how to do it right.

1. Choose Your Route

Loop (7–10 days):
- Denver → Estes Park → Grand Lake → Glenwood → Aspen → Leadville → Salida → Colorado Springs → Denver

Linear (3–5 days):
- Denver → Vail → Aspen → Crested Butte → Durango

Time it based on how long you’re traveling.

2. Best Seasons

- Late June to early October = best weather + open passes
- Winter = ski trip potential but limited roads

Avoid early spring — snowmelt makes for sloppy roads and closed trails.

3. Don’t Miss These Stops

Top towns and parks:
- Rocky Mountain NP
- Aspen
- Glenwood Springs
- Leadville
- Salida
- Durango
- Crested Butte

Each offers hikes, history, and jaw-dropping views.

4. Mountain Passes to Hit

Plan for:
- Trail Ridge Road (RMNP)
- Independence Pass
- Cottonwood Pass
- Million Dollar Highway (Ouray to Silverton)

Check CDOT — many are closed from Oct to May.

5. Lodging Tips

Book early. Options include:
- Cabins/lodges near RMNP or Telluride
- Hotels in Salida or Glenwood
- Campgrounds above 8,000 ft (pack warm)

6. Fuel Up + Stock Up

Gas up before:
- Trail Ridge
- Monarch or Independence Pass

Best grocery towns:
- Boulder
- Avon
- Gunnison

7. Prepare for Altitude

Expect:
- Headaches
- Dry air
- Fatigue

Hydrate and take it slow the first day or two.

8. Driving Tips

- Use lower gears for descents
- Watch for wildlife
- Pull over for faster cars
- Offline maps = essential

9. Optional Add-Ons

If you’ve got time:
- Black Canyon of the Gunnison
- Great Sand Dunes
- Maroon Bells
- Telluride

10. Final Tip

This isn’t just a drive — it’s an adventure through some of the most beautiful terrain in the U.S. Take your time, pull over often, and enjoy the ride.
